Devin Castle with Currant Wine

Devin is an ancient castle on the cliff towering above the confluence of Danube and Morava River. It is a place that is associated with many legends and history of our country.

It is located at the point where the two ancient trade routes - Danube and Amber meet. The Amber Route led from Italy to the Baltic region.

You will be driven to the castle by bus.

The Castle Hill passed through the hands of the Celts, Romans and witnessed the glory and fall of Great Moravia. Tasted the Government of the Kingdom of Hungary, was the place of codification of our language and has been for decades the witness of the painful boundary dividing Europe during the Cold War. Below the castle there is the memorial to the victims, people who have decided to leave the security of the socialist system and tried to swim across to Austria.

The castle ruin of Devin is so enchanting that inspired Jules Verne during his visit to Bratislava and he placed here his novel The Carpathian Castle. And it is hardly surprising, because one of the many owners of the castle was also the brother of bloody countess Elizabeth Bathory known as Čachtická Pani.

The castle is in ruins since Napoleonic troops blew it up.

The astonishing view from the castle rock covers the surrounding floodplain forests and rolling hills of the Little Carpathians. When the visibility is good you can see in the distance Vienna and the Austrian Alps. In the castle area there is a small museum, where archaeological artefacts found in the castle are exposed.

After visiting the castle a local favourite beverage is waiting for you.

Devin currant wine is made of red and black currants, which will play with your taste buds. You will taste 5 samples. Exceptional is the “holy Urban”, a black currant wine matured for several months in oak barrels to ensure the delicious taste and aroma. Be careful however, currant wine is easy to drink, but you can be also easily drunk.
